New Innkeepers, New Life, A Fine Old House

A little excited. A little nervous. Okay, those sentences are complete understatements. As we, Brad Loman and Keith Jenkins (that's me) begin our new lives as innkeepers, we realize that there are those that came before us, stewards of this fine old house, hosts of interesting travelers from all walks of life. We want to do it right, maybe even do great, and put a new spin on things as this bed & breakfast enters its second quarter century, and the house itself enters its second full century. Since we reopen on June 1st, after a little bit of hair pulling and back breaking, and warm feelings towards our new old home, we've decided to let that day be The Lancaster's birthday.

Built in 1912 for members of the Armstrong family, this summer sees the close of it's first hundred years. Wow. Kids grew up here, kids came home from college here, brides and grooms left in love from here. Grandparents grew older here, and moms and dads took care of a good house here. Maybe somewhere in there, parties were hosted, guests discussed the Titanic, the wars, and Kennedy. I like to think that Lancaster native and modernist painter Charles Demuth visited here once or twice in the early days. Demuth in my house!

Any old house needs a lot of work and care and love. Restoring, redecorating, reinventing an inn as a new innkeeper is nothing but a labour of love (I write these words at 2:30 am; there couldn't be any other reason). So, to share that experience with guests who knew the house at it was, and future guests (friends) who may come to know it well, and even the passerby who maybe spent a childhood here or relaxed here once with drinks and friends, I would like to record the changes - hopefully artful and deserved - that Brad and I, as new innkeepers, give to this fine old house.

Mud Sales to Begin in Lancaster County Pennsylvania

It is that time of year once again. The first Mud Sale of the season is set for Saturday February 25 in Strasburg, PA. Now most of you probably know about the Lancaster County Mud Sale season, but for those who do not, it is not the sale of fresh mud! Mud sales are auctions held at local fire companies as fund raisers. Items auctioned range from quilts, antiques, farm equipment, livestock, building supplies, buggies, and on and on. Most fire company web sites will have a listing of items being auctioned. Just visit any of these from the list below to research that weekend mud sale.

Mud sales are named from the time of year most are held, a time when the snow from winter is melting causing the grounds to be very muddy. So if it is muddy, wear your boots and be sure to take in several of these unique Lancaster County sales! Oh, by the way come hungry because the food is awesome!

This day's activities start at 5 pm and continues till 9 pm. Many events will take place through December 24 including horse drawn carriage rides, breakfast with Santa and visits with Santa. Here is an event that will make your Holiday Shopping easy! The Pennsylvania Guild Fine Craft Fair will be held this year at the Lancaster Convention Center in downtown Lancaster.

The annual Lancaster area event was held over the last 3 years at the Manheim Township High School off Lititz Pike. The move allows the craft show to grow from 120 exhibitors to 140 exhibitors, and to be exhibited in one large space as opposed to the three spaces used at the high school. The Guild is also teaming up with the Lancaster Parking Authority to offer $2 all day parking for show patrons at five participating parking garages in downtown Lancaster.
“Our mission is to support fine craftsmen and introduce the public to handcrafted works,’ says Guild executive director Sherrie Boyer. ”The move to the Lancaster Convention Center creates more visibility for our craftsmen and more access for patrons and the public. Buying local and buying handmade serve so many needs; our patrons support the arts and local artists – and our craftsmen are able to meet the public, educate about craft, and earn a living. It’s a positive experience for everyone.”

October is coming to a close, Halloween is this weekend. That means November is just around the corner and the start of the Christmas Shows for 2011 in Lancaster Pennsylvania. Here is a listing of shows and links to their websites.

American Music Theatre
Starting November 1 the all-new 2011 Christmas Show, Winter Wonderland, will immerse you in a festive evening of Yuletide whimsy and wonder. This snowy, outdoor-themed Original Show is sure to delight long-time fans as well as those attending for the first time. You’ll enjoy the spectacular vocals and breathtaking dance moves of professional artists from across the country. Running November 17 - December 23 is Miracle on 34th Street. Kris Kringle takes on the cynics among us in this musical adaptation of the popular holiday movie. A white-bearded gentleman claiming to be the real Santa Claus brings about a genuine miracle, spreading a wave of love throughout New York City, fostering camaraderie between Macy's and Gimbel's Department Stores, and convincing a cynical single mother, her curious daughter and the entire state of New York that Santa Claus and true happiness is no myth.

Rainbow Dinner Theatre
Starting November 8 - December 30 is Home for the Holidays. A nice young couple settle in for a cozy Christmas together in their New York apartment. No pressure, no parents. Especially her parents, who don't know they're living together... or that she even has a boyfriend, or that he's Jewish while she's not. It would be a beautiful Christmas if her parents don't show up on her door; it'll be a funnier Christmas when they do! Laugh all through the holidays and into next year with "Home For The Holidays"!

Sight and Sound Theatre
Running November 11 - December 31 is Miracle of Christmas. As the Wise Men and shepherds did so long ago, follow the star to witness the miraculous truth of the Savior's birth! Journey back in time and experience the bustling village of Bethlehem as camels, horses, donkeys and villagers surround you. Witness the beauty and majesty of angels worshipping in heaven, and proclaiming to shepherds, "The Savior is born!" The Fulton Theatre

Playing on stage October 19 - November 6 is Gaslight. Jack and Bella Manningham's home on Angel Street was the scene-many years ago-of Alice Barlow's murder, whose valuable jewels have never been found. Now Bella's belongings are disappearing and nothing seems to make sense. Is she falling victim to her mother's mental illness, or are other forces at work? When an unexpected visitor arrives with surprising news from Scotland Yard, shadows of uncertainty are cast on their domestic tranquility.

On stage November 30 - December 31 is Hairspray. Just in time for the holidays comes Broadway's big fat musical hit. Jump back to early 1960s Baltimore, where pleasantly plump Tracy Turnblad has big hair, an even bigger heart, and a huge dream to be a dancer on the Corny Collins Show. This musical-comedy blockbuster inspired a film and swept the Tony Awards-and audiences off their feet.

"The Confession: A Musical" Opens in Lancaster County, PA

The Confession A New Musical opened on September 14 at the Bird-in-Hand Stage in Bird-in-Hand, PA. This musical is an adaption of the ever popular book by Beverly Lewis in her Amish series. The touching Amish love story has an uplifting story line, soaring melodies and inspiring lyrics from Beverly Lewis’ “Heritage of Lancaster County Series,” weaving the lives of characters she first introduced in her "Heritage of Lancaster County" series. Long's Park Art and Craft Festival

It is art and craft show time of year in Lancaster County, PA! One of the top 10 fine art and craft show in the country takes place over Labor Day weekend at Long's Park. 200 of the finest Artists and Craftspeople will be showcased. It is quite a feat to be selected to participate in this show as there are over 1000 applications sent in each year from all over America, Canada and beyond.

While at the show you can enjoy live music, fine cuisine, wine and craft beer, free children's activities and an art gallery raffle. At the show gate, tickets are $10 for a one day pass, or $12 for a multi-day pass. Children 12 and under are free. Advance tickets are available on line at the Event website at the discounted rate of $8 for a one day pass and &10 for a multi-day pass. You will probably need several days to take in all the vast array of artisans and craftspeople. The event is held rain or shine so make your plans now to attend this spectacular show!

Peach Season is in Full Swing in Lancaster County!

Ah fresh peaches, makes your mouth water just thinking of biting into a fresh ripe peach and having the juice drip down your chin. Lancaster County Pa is full of orchards with Peach and Apple trees in abundance. Cling peach season is just finishing up and the first freestone peaches are on the stands waiting for you to pick them up.

Here are two recipes to enjoy those wonderful peaches!

Peaches n' Cream

1 large ripe fresh peach, peeled, cut in half and pitted
1/2 tablespoon butter
2 teaspoons heavy cream
2 teaspoons white Zinfandel or other fruity white wine
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 tablespoon packed brown sugar
Pinch of cinnamon
Whipped cream for serving

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Clean peach cavity with a fruit baller. Put peach halves in a small baking dish. Put butter in cavity in each peach half. Add cream. Sprinkle wine over peach, letting some accumulate in bottom of dish. Sprinkle vanilla and brown sugar over peach. Sprinkle lightly with cinnamon. Bake for 20 - 30 minutes, until tender and bubbly. Serve with a dollop of whipped cream. Enjoy!

Peaches Melba

1 large fresh sliced peach
1 tablespoon sugar
Almond Extract
Vanilla yogurt
Raspberry jam

Sugar sliced peaches and add a dash of almond extract. Refrigerate for 15 minutes. Put a spoon full of vanilla yogurt in a serving dish. Add peaches and drizzle with thinned raspberry jam. Enjoy!

July 4th Events in Lancaster County Pennsylvania

Can you believe that it is almost the 4th of July! It always seems like summer is just underway and all of a sudden July 4th pops up! Soon the half-way mark for Baseball, the All Star Game will be held, then before we can blink an eye, it will be Labor Day! Well let's not rush through the summer yet. Here are some area events happening in Lancaster, PA for this coming weekend's festivities.

Start of the weekend with the ever popular First Friday in downtown Lancaster City. First Friday's have become a date many look forward to for a very fun time with so many art galleries, shops and restaurants open late. Festivities begin at 5:00 pm and most shops and galleries are open til 9:00 pm. Click on the link above and print out a guide to help plan your evening.

If watching a parade strikes your fancy, on Friday July 1st travel up to Lititz for the 20th Annual Independence Day Parade through the town's streets. The parade begins at 6:30 and is followed with entertainment by Flamin' Dick & The Hot Rods in Lititz Springs Park. Admission is Free!

On Saturday July 2 in Lititz Spring Park will be the 194th Continuous Fourth of July Celebration! Gates open at noon, there is an entrance fee charged. Entertainment, a Baby Parade, Food Court, Queen of Candles Pageant, 7,000 candles illuminated and a hi-tech firework display with synchronized sound are a few of the many activities throughout the day.

Sunday July 3 rounds out the weekend with The Longs Park Summer Music Series. The 257th Army Band, The Band of our Nations Capital will entertain beginning at 7:30 pm and feature a historic cannon brigade and spectacular firework display. Admission if Free, bring your lawn chairs and blankets for an enjoyable evening!

Landis Valley Museum is a living history village and farm which collects, preserves and interprets the history and material culture of the Pennsylvania German rural community from 1740 to 1940 and enhances understanding of their successful practices, interactions with others, and the impact on the state and nation for citizens of and visitors to the Commonwealth.

Landis Valley Museum's richly layered story is the history of an early Pennsylvania German settlement, an unusual farm family, and the ongoing creation and exploration of a wonderfully diverse collection of artifacts. When brothers Henry Kinzer Landis (1865-1955) and George Diller Landis (1867 - 1954) opened the museum in 1925 at their Landis Valley residence, the area had been a small Pennsylvania German settlement since the mid 1800s. Expanded to its current size, we now invite visitors to experience 18th and 19th century village and farm life in Lancaster County, Pa, all in one visit. With over 100 acres and many historic buildings to explore throughout the four seasons, there's always something to see at Landis Valley Museum.

The museum is open daily. Hours are 9:00 A.M. - 5:00 P.M., Monday through Saturday and 12:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M. on Sunday.

The Bird-n-Hand Fire Company will hold it's annual Chicken BBQ on Saturday May 28. Eat in their air-conditioned dinning room, adults $10 children $6 or take out for $8.50. If you would just like to take out chicken it is only $6.

If Wine is to your liking, Waltz Vineyard will have a Summer Concert on Saturday May 28 form 5-8 p.m. Amy Ash and the Volcanoes will be the band with a special menu provided by Procida's. Bring your glasses, chairs and blankets and pack a picnic if you would like. Wine is available by the bottle and no other alcoholic beverages are permitted.

For a taste of Lancaster County, experience The Great Pennsylvania Flavor Fest on Saturday May 28 and Sunday May 29. Taste the flavors of Pennsylvania at the Great Pennsylvania FlavorFest, an all-encompassing showcase of Pennsylvania's unique cuisines and the region's cultural diversity. Not just your average food and wine festival, FlavorFest will dish up a delicious array of the state's culinary and wine offerings and the finest in artisan crafts. Did you know that Lancaster has it's own Baseball team? They are the Lancaster Barnstormers and play in the downtown stadium, Clipper Magazine Stadium. The Barnstormers play teams with names such as York Revolution, Camden Riversharks, Southern Maryland Blue Crabs, and The Long Island Ducks to name a few. Since Lancaster is the Red Rose City and York is the White Rose City, when these two teams play we have our own version of the War of The Roses.

Tickets range from $7 to $12 dollars and the food is very tasty and reasonably priced. So you can treat the whole family to Americas favorite past-time, a good old baseball game. The stadium is only a few years old and is a wonderful venue to watch a game. Check out the Lancaster Barnstormers web site to see their schedule and also a listing of "special" nights with free give-a-ways. They play through the middle of September and then the playoffs begin.

May 6 is First Friday in Downtown Lancaster

First Friday's in Downtown Lancaster is always a celebration of the arts. Every month, without exception, you can walk around and explore 70 plus arts venues. There are always new exhibitions, live music, theatrical performances, artist receptions and fun to be had by all. There are also many unique boutiques and outstanding restaurants to explore.

Central Market, the nations oldest continuously running indoor farmer's market, will be joining in this month's First Friday Celebration. The completion of a $7 million renovation project that began in April 2010 will be celebrated. There will be music outside the market and the market will be open till 9 pm. This market is rich with history, wonderful vendors and a beautiful building to behold.

It is only a few days from Spring!! Yes it is that wonderful time of year when we can reward ourselves from the hibernation of winter and get outside! I don't know about you but this winter has seemed long and cold to me. I am anxious to start the garden, pond and grounds work!

Something I discovered the other day about our area is the wonderful county parks, nature preserves and well kept trails we have to offer for the hiker enthusiast. The Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation has links to all of our county parks and preserves as well as directions and printable maps of the trails. The site also lists upcoming events that are held in the parks such as a recent maple tree tapping and the making of syrup.

There are many types of trails to choose from. The more rugged trial through woods and ruff terrain to the easy to walk rails-to-trails hikes. No matter what your expertise, Lancaster County PA has a trail for you. Whichever one you choose, there is one thing for sure, you will have beautiful scenery to enjoy!

Mid Atlantic Innkeepers Conference and Trade Show

Have you ever wondered how innkeepers keep up with the ever changing world around us? Mobile phone with apps., google places on google maps, blogs, tweets, facebook posts, etc. etc. Yes in order to give our guests what they want and need, we have to keep up with the latest technology.

Just like many businesses, there are shows and conferences to attend as well as webinars and chat groups that keep us informed with the latest products and services for our guests. There are professional organizations that focus on inn keeping. The Professional Association of Innkeepers International or PAII is one such organization on the national level. There are state associations as well as local ones.

The Mid Atlantic Innkeepers Conference and Trade Show is having its annual conference starting this Sunday March 6 and runs through Tuesday March 8 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. There is a floor show with many vendors attending to show us their unique products to improve our guests experience as well as products to make our lives easier as well. The show is loaded with seminars to help us in areas we are not up to date on or want to become more knowledgeable about.
